Sustainability in the Shop: From the Drawing Board to Your Cutting Board

We design a lot of custom projects engineered to fit perfectly in the space they’re designed for. As a result, a lot of our projects don’t use standard sized measurements of wood. We cut strips here, have a leftover chunk there, and by the end of a good work week, we have our fair share of scraps leftover. Instead of throwing it in a landfill, we try to give those pieces a second chance at life.

We’ve found that these extra pieces make excellent boards, whether it’s cutting boards or project boards. They offer leeway in sizing, which allows us to make the most of the wood. Each board is uniquely handmade, and since it’s from upcycled wood, it comes with the good karma of being a sustainable product.

This board is a mix of mahogany and hickory.

As you can see in the photos, we think mixed wood makes some pretty stunning boards.

Mark A Special Occasion with a Custom Cutting Board

One of our personal favorites, this board combines three different woods: hickory, walnut, and mahogany.

Cutting boards are an underrated gift. There, we said it. They deserve more credit for what they offer! Cutting boards are a useful, thoughtful gift, especially when they offer a sense of woodsy elegance. They enable people to dice up their garden harvest without terrorizing their counters, and they’re an important component to any adult kitchen. Having a solid, wooden cutting board, as opposed to a flimsy plastic, changes the whole experience. And since this wood is upcycled, it makes it double more sustainable plan a plastic alternative.
